The day was clear with not very much wind-an ordinary midsummer's day. From the Nagasaki Prefectural Report on the bombing, something of the shock of the explosion can be inferred: The magnitude of casualties is set in relief by a comparison with the Tokyo fire raid of 9-10 March 1945, in which, though nearly 16 square miles were destroyed, the number killed was no larger, and fewer people were injured.Īt Nagasaki, 3 days later, the city was scarcely more prepared, though vague references to the Hiroshima disaster had appeared in the newspaper of 8 August. Seventy to eighty thousand people were killed, or missing and presumed dead, and an equal number were injured. The surprise, the collapse of many buildings, and the conflagration contributed to an unprecedented casualty rate. ![]() The "fire-wind" and the symmetry of thebuilt-up center of the city gave a roughly circular shape to the 4.4 square miles which were almost completely burned out. The "fire-wind" attained a maximum velocity of 30 to 40 miles per hour 2 to 3 hours after the explosion. The inrush of air easily overcame the natural ground wind, which had a velocity of only about 5 miles per hour. A "fire-storm," a phenomenon which has occurred infrequently in other conflagrations, developed in Hiroshima: fires springing up almost simultaneously over the wide flat area around the center of the city drew in air from all directions. Practically the entire densely or moderately built-up portion of the city was leveled by blast and swept by fire. ![]() Because of this accuracy and the flat terrain and circular shape of the city, Hiroshima was uniformly and extensively devastated. The bomb exploded slightly northwest of the center of the city. Many were caught in the open, and most of the rest in flimsily constructed homes or commercial establishments. Because of the lack of warning and the populace's indifference to small groups of planes, the explosion came as an almost complete surprise, and the people had not taken shelter. The attack came 45 minutes after the "all clear" had been sounded from a previous alert. Most of the industrial workers had already reported to work, but many workers were enroute and nearly all the school children and some industrial employees were at work in the open on the program of building removal to provide firebreaks and disperse valuables to the country. On a very technical twisty two-way county thoroughfare in northwestern New Jersey, we found ourselves shocked at how well the Equinox unexpectedly sticks to the road. Where it does make up for it is in the handling department. Though overtaking and merging at highway speeds requires lots of pedal-to-the-metal and making use of the transmission’s “Low” gear mode, especially since it’s always eager to upshift to the highest gear. Around town, the torque is enough to keep up with traffic if you really work through its rev range. Despite the slight bump, even with its smooth six-speed automatic, the Equinox musters up a zero-to-60 time of only 9 seconds. Power output gains five ponies totaling 175 horsepower with the same 203 pound-feet of torque as in previous years. Chris Chin Performance: 9/15Īfter dropping its optional and more powerful 2.0-liter turbo-four in 2021 and the lovely fuel-efficient diesel in 2019, the Equinox makes do solely with its base 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder. The outdated infotainment system in the Chevy Equinox is something of a blessing as it’s intuitive, simple and not overloaded with buttons. But as it continues to age gracefully, it’s clearly outgunned, both figuratively and literally, by the competition. It is not a bad choice and one that’s still a valid option in the segment. When the current third-gen arrived in 2017, it showcased a new bar, demonstrating commendable road manners, lots of passenger space, comfort and relevant safety tech at levels that were never quite present altogether in previous versions. Unless you’re a fan of buying American (the Equinox for North America is built in either Mexico or Canada) or looking for a compact crossover that’s American in flavor, there’s little to separate it from the outrageously compelling foreign rivals. The base front-wheel-drive LS stamps its invoice at $27,995, including the mandatory $1,395 shipping charge. Previously, the Equinox came with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo four and an excellently fuel-efficient diesel. Although it’s merely adequate at moving the small ute out of its own way, it quickly loses steam once momentum builds. Sadly, through its revisions, all upgradable engine choices disappeared, leaving the base 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder as the only powertrain driving either the front- or all-four wheel. With commendable road manners, lots of passenger space, comfort and relevant safety tech, the Chevy Equinox is a steady bet in the crowded compact crossover space. There’s also the Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, fan-favorite Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson and fellow domestic SUV, the Ford Escape. Such examples include a new Honda CR-V and the hugely compelling and new Kia Sportage, which are the newest kids on the block. Though because it’s turning six years old, it’s certainly beginning to feel a bit last-generation as newer, fresher, and more value-packed options-particularly from across the pond-hit the market over the past several years. For 2023, all Equinox’s go up in price by around $300 across the board while the color palettes gain some new choices, and an updated electrically power-assisted braking system. After discontinuing the barebones L model as part of the refresh, the LS, LT, RS and Premier trims soldier on with few changes. In 2022, the Equinox received a mid-cycle update, which included updated exterior styling cues, revised trim levels and packaging. It entered the market in 2005 as Chevy’s entry into one of the hottest and most popular segments, only to become the company’s best-selling model behind the Silverado full-size pickup. There’s no doubt that the Louisiana Crunch Cake is a southern classic that ranks up there with crack cake and other favorites. In addition to the fancy theatrical animation, this movie comes with a fancy theatrical soundtrack, so you can listen to both the English and Japanese voice tracks in two-channel stereo or 5.1-channel surround. The opening sequences in particular have some lovely autumn scenery behind them, which is a nice way of foreshadowing the maple-leaf motif that follows Senna around. There's plenty of bright color to offset all the drab Soul Reaper black and white, and nothing gets in the way of all the extra background detail. The movie is presented in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen, straight from the digital source with virtually no noticeable flaws in the picture. Memories of Nobody looks a heck of a lot better than even the more impressive episodes of the TV series, and this DVD transfer makes that extra animation budget worth it. If you're having a rough time with the "Soul Society" arc, it's the perfect way to take a little break. Memories of Nobody is a well-told sidestory, and a theatrical animation budget means that Bleach has never looked better. Keeping that caveat in mind, this is an easy one to recommend. If you're already a fan, this won't be a problem, but once again, this isn't a story for newcomers to the series. Set a while after the first "Soul Society" stories are over (by this point, Ichigo is on more-or-less good terms with his fellow Soul Reapers), Memories of Nobody brings in a fair number of supporting characters without taking any time to properly introduce them. ![]() This side-story assumes that you've watched a lot of the TV show or read a lot of the manga. If you're not a big fan of Bleach, you'll probably have given up on the movie a while before then anyway. If you're an enthusiastic follower of the series, the odds are good that your favorite character is going to get their moment in the sun. It's not the most intricately-plotted resolution, but there's a little more to it than simple I-hit-you-you-hit-me, and as fan-service goes it's pretty hard to beat. We know what they want to do, but the why of it stays pretty hazy, and some of them don't even get proper names before the big action climax hits.Īt that point, whys and wherefores take a back seat to: "Wow, that sure looked cool." With about 20 minutes to go, Memories of Nobody settles down to non-stop violent pyrotechnics - most of the series' major cast members get a chance to waste one of the bad guys in some expensively spectacular way. Visually, they're pretty sharp designs, but beauty is only skin deep, and they don't get much development beyond that point. It's too bad that the villains aren't as interesting as she is. Senna's a fun character for a one-off story like this – she might get a little tiring after too much exposure, but in small doses, she's whimsical, silly, and cute. Still, at least it fills the intervening time with some charming, well-animated moments. The plot, as tends to be the way with these sorts of things, hangs on the heroes taking a good long while to figure out something that the audience will pick up in no time flat. The Soul Society episodes don't have nearly enough Kon in them, either, whereas this movie has just enough. ![]() Locking Rukia up in a tower means we don't get to see her and Ichigo bounce off each other. It has a sense of humor, for instance, and more emphasis on the kind of light-hearted interactions between the leading characters that made the earlier movements of the TV series more fun. In some ways, this movie points up a few of the less obvious problems with the Soul Society arc. She looks like a Soul Reaper, swings a sword like a Soul Reaper, and certainly thinks she's a Soul Reaper herself, but it might not be quite so simple as that. While Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki know how to deal with those well enough, they're not sure what's up with a different visitor, a young girl named Senna. It begins on a peaceful day in Karakura Town, or as peaceful as it ever gets when Hollows are stomping through the local park on a regular basis. ![]() Usually these kinds of side-stories are a step down in quality from the original series – the Naruto movies are an unfortunate example – but this is one that could actually teach the original series a lesson or two. Memories of Nobody, the first Bleach spin-off movie, tells a satisfying story with plenty of action and a touch of emotion that you can sit down and watch in 90 minutes. With the regular series DVD release currently bogged down in the interminable "Soul Society" arc right now, it's nice to be reminded that Bleach doesn't have to be that way.
